October 2007 - Responsibility Matrix

One tool for decisions, commitments, authority, responsibility!
Presenter:
 Connie Plowman, PMP
  • Problems on projects are associated with people and not technology
  • Project communication is cumbersome and difficult
  • Activities always fall through the cracks on every project
  • Making a decision takes forever
All of these problems can be connected with not being clear about who is doing what on projects - where are the decisions, commitments, authority, and responsibilities on your project team? The Responsibility Matrix. It is a simple, graphic tool for building your project team, getting the project team together and obtaining real buy-in for who is responsible for activities on the project. It demonstrates visually who the key players are on the project. The Responsibility Matrix will get decisions made much more quickly and efficiently by identifying which decisions need to be made, who will be participating in gathering information for the decisions and who will actually be responsible for getting the decision. It can be a visual tool for clearly communicating the resources that are needed on the project and which specific tasks lack anyone to do them. Management will quickly see the resource constraints on the project.
